For the Record

Jane's 18 month checkup:

21 lbs. 15 oz. -- 15th percentile

32 inches -- 58th %

Head circumference -- 89th %

she's always had a big head...

And thank you to:

Valerie for cutting my hair exactly how I wanted it,

Delia for watching Jane while I got my hair cut, without my even asking,

Laura Lee for letting us just hang out for a couple hours so we don't eat each other being home all the time,

and Tannie for letting us kill time before the oil change!

merc's quirks

Remember back in April when we bought the Mercury Mountaineer? We opted for an older car with higher miles to avoid having a car payment--we wanted only what we could pay cash for. Well, it has worked out pretty well so far, but as with any old car, it has its quirks. The most annoying?

power locks

In an ideal world, power locks make it very convenient to unlock all of the doors of the car by simply pushing one button. In a super ideal world, you can push that button on the remote and unlock all of the doors before you even get to the car. Whoever thought of something so amazing?

And whoever gets to live in an ideal world?

As I said, Merc has some quirks. In our less-ideal world, the magic unlock button doesn't work on the driver's side of the car. Well, fine. You can just reach over and push the button on the passenger side, right? Annoying, but do-able. Unless, of course, the locks don't work.

Instead of just unlocking the doors, the locks will bounce up and down. Locked, unlocked, locked, unlocked...

The only way to stop it is to open the driver's side door. Why? No idea. But it works. So when the locks wig out, we open the driver's door.

Unless, of course, the outside handle of the driver's door snaps in half, making it impossible to open from the outside.

Ok, so hit the button on the remote and unlock the doors? Wait...locked, unlocked, locked, unlocked...

And wait again! If you open the driver's door to stop the psycho locks, the alarm sets itself. So when you open the back door, the alarm goes off. And the remote only works half of the time (we even bought a new battery and everything). So the only way you can turn off the alarm is to start the car--all while keeping a firm grip on the toddler who is constantly looking for any opportunity to run. And, of course, waving at all the people who give you dirty looks for letting your alarm go.

my multi-daily car routine:

Hit the remote button with fingers crossed that it will work. When it doesn't, open the passenger door with the key (holding the key down while you pull the handle so it doesn't lock again after it's unlocked), stretch across the whole car (note: I'm short and pregnant--it's a long way) to open the driver's door from the inside. Walk back around, unlock the back door from inside. Open back door. Go back to driver's door and start car so the alarm will stop. Chase down Jane from wherever she has run to, assuming I wasn't holding her this whole time. Buckle her into her car seat. Get in the car, buckle me in, drive away.

then breathe

BUT!

My ideal world is creeping closer!
CHRIS REPLACED THE DOOR HANDLE!

The locks are still weird, the alarm still goes off, but I can open the door.

thanks, Chris :)

Help!

A request to the moms out there who read this: My best friend is coming from Missouri to visit with her almost 2-yr-old daughter. In avoiding the hassles of checking anything on the airplane, she is not bringing a car seat. So...

Does anyone have a spare car seat
that I can borrow for about 10 days (July 27-Aug 6)?

Her daughter is 25 lbs, so either a forward-facing seat or an infant seat with a higher weight limit would work.

Thank you!

I promise that I will post eventually about something other than Jane, but I had two cute pictures that were just too good to pass up.

#1: The towel

Jane got out of the tub Sunday morning and I realized that I had forgotten to bring a fresh diaper upstairs. I sat her down at the top of the stairs and said "stay right there" while I ran to grab a diaper. When I was coming back up the stairs, I saw how cute she looked and said "stay right there some more" and ran back down for the camera. I was quite out of breath--stairs plus pregnant does NOT equal friends--but the picture was worth it.

#2: The chair

We had some friends over for dinner and games last night. Jane became rather attached to Scott, but after a while of unplanting all his bean fields (we were playing Bohnanza), she decided to be really ornery instead. We got tired of it pretty quick and decided it was time for bed. She put up quite a fit for a long time before she stopped screaming and pounding on her door. After Meagan and Scott left, I went in to her room to see if she had made it back onto her bed before she fell asleep...

Apparently not. But she did have all three of her blankets wrapped around her, and her baby was firmly grasped in her non-visible arm. I was glad that the camera flash didn't wake her up...and neither did my picking her up and putting her back on her bed. It was cute, but I was imagining some major neck cramps in the morning...

P.S.

Plug for Chris:
We have posted a link to the Poptropica Creator's Blog. You can check it out to see what kind of stuff Chris does for his job. The more exciting thing, though, would be to check out poptropica.com and actually play some of the games that Chris has helped to write and program. (Keep in mind that it was written for kids.)

Who doesn't want to play games for a living?

Long Green Scarf

When the charcoal in the grill is super hot, and you are flipping especially greasy burgers, stand back...

...or you might end up with a burnt-hair scented perm.

"No" is not my favorite word of Jane's. It is now her mantra for everything...No, she will not put her shoes away. No, she does not want more food. No, she will not go to bed. No, she will not. Whatever it is, No. It also makes her crying sound much more pathetic when you have a string of "No! No! No!" very sadly stated over and over...it makes us sound just plain mean when we won't give in when obviously her life is so terrible!

If you eat enough boxes of macaroni and cheese, eventually one is going to stand up for its rights and beg not to be eaten.

If your noodle lands in the sink like that, I admonish you NOT to eat it. (Of course, I don't know that I would really want to eat anything that had landed in my sink anyway.)

And should I leave Jane alone for twenty minutes while I take a shower?

No.

August 2008

First camping trip: Moon Lake, Petty Reunion. Also first debut in a swimming suit.

October 2008

First professional pictures taken...and only, actually. Maybe someday I'll fork out the money again.

Never will Jane be able to say that she hasn't broken any bones...

If you missed the story, she fell off our bed and snapped her left tibia in half. She had this cast for three weeks, then a shorter green one for another three weeks.

December 2008

The cast came off! The sad part of that was that her leg was rather severely burned while they were cutting the cast...the friction caused everything to heat up too much and her skin was very close to the cast--it started blistering before they were even done. She still has a scar from the burn.

We also finally stopped giving her steroids. That was a happy day.
