For Amanda

My sister-in-law's first baby is due today. She's tired of all the questions, comments, and sympathy that come with still being pregnant. Ladies, you can relate. It has put me in mind of just a few of the obnoxious things people said to me during the last few weeks of my pregnancies, along with how I wished I had responded. Don't worry, I never actually said any of these things. I just wanted to. Pregnancy does some ugly things...

#5
"Haven't you had that baby yet?"

"You're as fat as I am. Where's your baby?"

#4
"With that shirt on, you don't really look pregnant."

"With those pants on, you look really fat, too."

#3
"Rub the buddha!"

Just start rubbing their face. Then maybe they'll get the idea of personal boundaries.

#2
"Just hang in there. You're almost done."

"Shut up or I'll break your face."

Ok, really, I never had a good comeback to this one. But it drove me crazy when people said it.

And finally,

#1
"You're pregnant?
You do know how that happens, right?"

"..."

"..."

How would you respond to that? 10,000 points to the person who gives me the best retort.
And yes, someone actually said that to me. A mother, even. Maybe it took her longer to figure out...

When I was pregnant with Oliver I was enormous. One time at the grocery store the checker said "Oohh, any day now!".... I still had 3 months. I was devastated!

My retort to your other comment would be "why yes!" Followed by a play by play of the baby making ritual. I bet that person would never make that comment again! (Of course I'd never actually have the nerve!)

Lol, what a great post.

I'd deadpan it: "Wait, what? I'm PREGNANT?!? Honey....! You've got some 'splainin' to do!"

I would just say "No, I really don't know how it happened. Can you please explain it to me?"

I would be super blunt about it. Make it really awkward. Well the day I conceived... not that I've had experience with that mind you.

Tell her, "No," and look honestly perplexed.

And then just wait for the deliciously terrible awkward silence to ensue. Hehe. Make sure you have your smartphone on record before you start this epic conversation though.

I love the other side when people pointedly ignore a pregnant belly for fear of insulting a fat lady- i've gotten that a few times...
"Oh, you are pregnant?" "Uh, yes, did you think I was just this fat all the time?!"

Awesomest blog post ever! And I would definitely say something very inappropriate to that person.... Like Michael said, lines would be crossed. Or you could go the opposite direction and say it was forced... That'd be a fun reaction. And there's still no baby yet. I was really thinking I'd be done by now. Guess I was right in wanting October in the first place.

I have had people say that to me too! Or "Don't you own a Television?" - What do you say to that? "You enjoy your TV more than Sex?" ha ha.

My answer - UM, SEX right? Just kidding. People are so stupid. I love this post.
