Canadian Thistle

Now you see it...

...now you don't!

Canadian thistle is nasty. Our house was vacant for seven or eight months before we bought it, and the yard was, let's just say, hurting from lack of attention. The bushes were huge, as mentioned before, and there was thistle throughout the yard.

Being new to the whole home-owner thing, we were painfully ignorant of the fact that Canadian thistle primarily spreads through seed. Meaning that when they got this tall

and we mowed the lawn, we pretty much gave it permission to completely take over our yard. Ugly.

So, in a skewed perception of a date (meaning no kids), Chris and I spent three hours last Saturday night pulling out each individual weed by hand, one by one.

Three hours. That's an hour per bag. Yes, those are full of nothing but thistle.

We're really hoping that, in the long run, this will do the trick. We know that we will probably have to pull them out again two or three times more, but hopefully there will be less each time. I would rather not spray them, both to avoid the expense, the possibility of killing the grass, and just to avoid having harsh chemicals around. So, cross your fingers!

And a bonus for my parents who are on a road trip...

Jane watches a lot of movies.

Apparently, she doesn't want to forget any detail.

It's fun to have a window that both my girls can see out of.
