Our never-ending quest for bread

Chris grew up eating homemade bread. I grew up eating whatever was cheapest at the grocery store. Now, we can't find any bread that we both like!

We have tried several brands and varieties, and we have learned a few things. One, Chris doesn't like wheat bread. Rule that out. Two, I am not going to make homemade bread. Rule that out, too.

A few attempts:

Grandma Sycamore. It is moist, which we like, and it's a bit thicker, so Chris can eat less and feel more satisfied. Problems: Probably because of the moisture content, it seems to go bad faster. We can leave it in the fridge, but that dries it out. Even before it goes bad, I can usually taste a very slight hint of mold flavor. Maybe it's just me, but it's enough to make me not want to eat it (and that's not just when I'm pregnant, by the way).

Western Family basic white bread. I like this brand better, but Chris says it's too dry and there's just not enough to it.

...something from Sam's Club. I can't remember the brand name. The loaves were longer, which was nice in theory, but we don't always go through them fast enough to eat it all before it starts going bad. It was a little more moist than the Western Family bread without being quite so moist as Grandma Sycamore's. But still not amazing to either of us.

Sigh. We've been going back and forth on this the entire time we've been married...we have such hard trials, huh? ;)

What kind of bread do you eat?

Have you tried Smith's cottage bread? It is almost like homemade - it is a heavier bread and the loaf isn't too large. Most weeks it is on sale for $1.00 per loaf or maybe a quarter more than that.

Good luck.

I have a very hard time finding perfect bread too. But I think that my problem is more that I get sick of one kind and try to find something else. I also get torn between price and taste...hum. I'm not any help, but there's my two cents.

I have to say that my favorite store bought is Grandma Sycamore, and I've never encountered any of the problems you mentioned. In fact I've found that it lasts a REALLY long time. However, with that being said, I only buy wheat bread, so that is probably where the difference comes in.

Sorry I'm no help!

I guess you could always try buying from Old Grist Mill - their bread is awesome. Another thing you could try is getting bread fromt he bakery at Macey's - they have good loaves of bread there.

We love the Granny's Delight stuff. It's moist like Grandma Sycamore, but it stays good for a while. I need lots of fiber in my diet that I don't get through veggies, and their 100% whole wheat fiber bread is great! It tastes good. I ate white bread for the first time in like 2 years last weekend, and it was almost too sweet for me anymore. But they make white breads that are really good too. You can find them at Harmons!

I love harper's homemade, but I haven't been able to find it in SLC. I guess I could try to look harder. I've just been eating grandma sycamore. But I keep it in the fridge.

I always liked grandma sycamore's too, and we like Macey's/Lee's farm bread. But since I have started making my own, I really don't like the taste of store bought. Maybe you could get a bread maker? (I got one from DI once) Maybe it could be Chris' job to throw the ingredients in before you go to bed one night a week? :)

We eat Grandma Sycamore and it is so yummy. My friend calls it "doughnut bread." Mmmmmm... We buy extra and freeze it. You could do that with half a loaf. When you use the last piece (or are about there) you just take it out of the freezer, pop it on the counter, and let it thaw. It doesn't get mushy and tastes the same. I <3 bread!
