Potty Training & Breastfeeding

I know that discussion of various bodily functions and fluids is generally considered taboo, but I also know that there are several people out there who would be interested nonetheless. If you are not one of them, I suggest you stop reading now.


We have been potty training Jane for maybe three weeks--since right before I went back to school. Maybe not the easiest timing, but it wasn't exactly my idea. Jane talked about "going potty" ALL THE TIME. She would tell me right when she went in her diaper, and she would usually wake up dry after a nap. So we let the adventure begin.

I can't really say how it's going. I have nothing to gauge it by. There are some days when we have to change her diaper several times during the day or she'll stay in one dry pull-up until bed. The game plan at the moment is mostly play it by ear--we take her to the bathroom when we think about it or if she asks. Beyond that, I pretty much have no idea.

But at least I have that cute picture to torture Jane with when she's older...

Breastfeeding is not always my favorite activity, but it is going better this time around. I can't pinpoint any specific reason why it's better--it's just what we do. Of course, we do appreciate the side benefits, like saving money by not buying formula.

Pumping takes a bit of effort. I have my system all worked out at school--I can get set up pretty quickly and cleaned up quickly when I'm done. The disappointing thing is that I don't have as much time as I really need. It's frustrating to have to stop right in the middle when things are going well, but continuing isn't much of an option when the kids are coming back in from recess. I also pump during my prep in the afternoon. That can be a trick on the days when I have a meeting scheduled or a parent shows up to talk about their student.

And yet I'm still feeling pretty determined to keep it going. I don't want to quit before I really feel done, so we're going to tough it out and keep pumping until Megan decides she's done.

Amusing Side Note: I bought a used electric pump off ksl.com (thanks, Christian, for helping me with that). I pulled out the user manual and other random pamphlets from a pocket and found a few extras...there were three or four packets of wetnaps, like you get from a restaurant. Which restaurant, you ask? Hooters.
