Back to School...again

I've officially completed my first five days of school after maternity leave. It's a bit of a change...

...things I'm re-learning...

Eat lunch quickly so I don't run out of time before recess is over.

The order of my students' names on the gradesheet--it's taking me longer to record grades when I can't remember where each name is.

Patience. Having 26 fifth graders is different than a toddler and an infant.

Go to the bathroom any chance I get--because it's going to be awhile before I get another chance.

...things I've noticed...

I can walk down the hall a lot faster than I could in September.

Fifth graders sneeze, cough, and pick their noses a lot. And I notice every time.

...things I've changed...

We now have a question box. Holy cow, I can't stand how many questions they ask! So I set a question limit and when I'm done, they have to write their question down and put it in the box for later answering.

I lock the door during recess. I don't need an audience while I pump milk for Megan.

Every student is required to get hand sanitizer every time they cough or sneeze. Even if I'm in the middle of teaching, they have to get up right now. There are seven different bottles readily available throughout the classroom. Call me paranoid if you will.

...things I miss...

Watching Kung Fu Panda multiple times in one day--and again the next.

Eating whatever I want whenever I want.

Checking blogs repeatedly throughout the day.

Building with blocks and playing dolls with Jane.

Holding my baby whenever I want for as long as I want.

...things I'm enjoying...

Fifth graders are funny. We're never at a loss for corny jokes and bad puns.

Feeling productive knowing I've gotten a lot done in one day.

Standing in front of a class and seeing them suddenly understand what I'm teaching.

Walking into the playroom at day care to hear Jane yell "Hi, Mommy!" and run to give me a hug.

Picking up Megan and having her snuggle her head onto my shoulder.

Getting a kiss from my husband at the end of the day.

Coming home. It's easier to appreciate something that you've gone without, for however short a time.

I like this post... a lot. I guess I'll have to live my teaching through you.

I'm glad you are enjoying being back at school... even if there are things you are missing.

I loved this post! I think I may have to start volunteering at an elementary school because I miss it soooo much!
